All the tours depart from the office of the Touring Club of Akureyri (FFA) in Strandgata 23, Akureyri, unless otherwise stated.

January

1st A walking tour on New Year´s Day. skor

19th Hálsaskógur forest, a guided ski-tour. skidi skidi

Departure at 10.00 in private cars.
Guide: Frímann Guðmundsson.
Hálsaskógur is a short distance north of Akureyri. We drive there and follow paths through the forest.
Fee: Free for all.

31st Introducing the touring program for 2019:

We meet in Verkmenntaskóli in Akureyri at 20.00, enter via the west entrance. The touring committee of FFA will describe the tours planned for 2019. There will also be a lecture, given by an invited speaker, as well as an exhibition of outdoor equipment and clothing.

February

16th-17th Fjallaborg – to celebrate the þorri-feast. skidi skidi  pictures 2012

We drive east past Lake Mývatn and north of the Skógarmannafjöll mountains we leave the cars and walk on skis to the Fjallaborg hut (9 km) where we enjoy a þorri- feast on Saturday evening. We return home the following day.  

 

March

2nd Vaðlaheiði mountain, a ski-tour. skidi skidi  pictures

We drive to Svalbarðsströnd, east of Eyjafjörður fjord. Then we ascend the Vaðlaheiði mountain on skis and enjoy a beautiful view west across the fjord to Akureyri town.

16th Bakrangi mountain, a walking-tour. skor skor skor

We drive to Björg farm in Kaldakinn and climb the mountain from the farm. There is a magnificient view from the summit across Skjálfandi bay and Aðaldalur valley.
Distance: 8 - 10 km, vertical ascent: 710 m.

30th Stöng – Þverá, a ski-tour.  skidi skidi

We drive along the ring road to the turn-off for Stöng guesthouse on Mývatnsheiði, west of lake Mývatn. From there we walk north across the moorland between the valleys of Reykjadalur and Laxárdalur to the Þverá farm in Laxárdalur. You will hear stories of people who perished in this area during winter storms.
Total distance: 17 km, easy walking across gentle hills. 

 

April

6th Mosi hut, a ski-tour.  skidi skidiskidi

We drive to Dalvík town and walk southwest through Böggvisstaðadalur valley up to the hut. This tour is arranged in collaboration with the Touring Club of Svarfaðardalur.
Total distance: 18 km, vertical ascent: 650 m.

 

May

1st Súlur. 1143 m. Hike or ski tour skor skor skor  pictures

The annual trip of the FFA to this local mountain of Akureyri town. We follow a marked route to the summit which offers fine views of the Akureyri and Eyjafjörður area.
Total distance: 13 km, vertical ascent: 860 m. 

4th Hnjótafjall – Helja, a ski-tour.  skidi skidiskidi

We drive to Atlastaðir farm in Svarfaðardalur, then walk up to Stóravarða cairn on Heljardalsheiði mountain pass. Then we walk past the Deilir mountain and around the upper end of Unadalur valley along Hákambar mountain. We return to the farm through Skallárdalur valley. This tour is arranged in collaboration with the Touring Club of Svarfaðardalur.
Total distance: 19 km, vertical ascent: 880 m.

11th A bird-watching trip. skor pictures

The annual bird-watching trip of the FFA, near Akureyri, exact location dependent on local conditions.

11th-12th Botni hut, a walking-tour. skor skor

We drive to Svartárkot farm in Bárðardalur valley and walk from there to the hut along the beautiful Suðurá river. We observe the signs of the arrival of spring in this mountain area, including the nests of the pink-footed goose.
Total distance: 28 – 30 km, easy walking.

18th Tungnafjall by Eyjafjörður valley (1,140 m). skor skor skor

We drive to Rifkelsstaðarétt by Þverá. We take a look at the waterfall where Þverá river plunges into Mjaðmá river. We walk uphill along the Upper-Þverá river and follow the north-ridge of Tungnafjall mountain to the top.

June

1st Hrísey island: History, nature and culture. skor

We drive to Árskógssandur village and take the ferry across the sea to Hrísey island. We walk around the island with Þorsteinn Þorsteinsson, our local guide, who tells us about the community and the natural wonders of this island.
The ferry ticket is not included in the price quoted above.

8th Þengilshöfði mountain by Grenivík village. skor

15th Egilsárgil and Bólugil gorges. skor skor

We drive to Skagafjörður district. West of Öxnadalsheiði pass we walk along the Egilsárgil gorge and observe signs of its interesting geological history. We then drive to Bólugil gorge in Blönduhlíð community and walk up along the gorge and admire a series of beautiful waterfalls which are part of a nature reserve.

18th- 22nd A walking week – five evening walks.

18th Leyningshólar woodland. skor

We drive south through Eyjafjörður valley to Leyningshólar, a series of wooded hills at the mouth of Villingadalur valley. We walk through the hills, following car tracks and walking paths.

19th Vaglaskógur forest.skor

We drive through the Vaðlaheiði tunnel to the largest forest in North Iceland. We walk through the forest, following car tracks and walking paths.

20th Summer solstice on Múlakolla mountain (970 m). skor skor skor pictures

We drive to Ólafsfjörður and walk up from the old road around Ólafsfjarðarmúli north of Brimnesá river. Múlakolla is a good location for observing the midnight sun.

21st Kristnesskógur forest.skor

We drive to Kristnes hospital in Eyjafjarðarsveit. We follow paths through the forest on the slope above the hospital and learn about the history of the forest and its connection to the tuberculosis sanatorium at Kristnes.

22nd Midsummer night on Haus on Staðarbyggðarfjall mountain (590 m). skor skor

We drive to Sel by Öngulsstaðir farm and walk from there up to the cairn on the north end of the mountain from where there is a fine view across Eyjafjörður district and Akureyri town.

29th Illagilsfjall mountain (1,126 m). skor skor skor

We drive to Fornhagi farm in Hörgárdalur valley. We walk uphill along the gorge and wade west across the river before ascending the Illagilsfjall mountain. We return through the watershed at Kytra and back to the farm.
Vertical ascent: 1,100 m.   

July  

6th Hólafjall mountain in Öxnadalur valley.  skor skor skor

We drive to Hólar farm and walk up the north ridge of Hólafjall mountain to the top. Here we are at the centre of an ancient volcano. We return along the west slope of the mountain to the cars.
Max. elevation above sea level: 922 m.

13th Kerling mountain (1,538 m) – a seven summits walk.  skor skor skor skor  pictures

We drive to Finnastaðir farm south of Akureyri. From there we ascend Kerling, the highest mountain in Eyjafjörður district. Then we walk north across the summits Hverfandi, Þríklakkar, Bóndi, Litli-Krummi, Stóri-Krummi, Syðrisúla og Ytrisúla. Finally we descend into Glerárdalur to the car park at Heimari-Hlífá.
Walking distance: 20 km. Vertical ascent: 1,440 m.

20th Böggvisstaðadalur – Grímubrekkur - Böggvisstaðadalur.  skor skor skor

We drive to Dalvík town and walk west through Böggvisstaðadalur valley up to Heiðarskarð pass on Reykjaheiði. From there we walk north along the mountain tops to Grímubrekkur and then east and down into Grímudalur and Böggvisstaðadalur valleys. Beautiful mountain scenery.
Walking distance: 19-20 km, max. elevation above sea level: 1,000 m.

27th Hörgárdalsheiði pass.  skor skor skor

We drive west across Öxnadalsheiði to Skagafjörður district. We walk from the old bridge across Norðurá river at Heiðarsporður through Norðurárdalur valley, east across Hörgárdalsheiði pass and down into Hörgárdalur valley to the Staðarbakki farm. This was previously the main route from Norðurárdalur valley to Eyjafjörður district
Walking distance: 25 km, max. elevation above sea level: 450 m.

27th-30th Bræðrafell - Askja.  skor skor skor

Day 1: We drive from Akureyri to Herðubreiðarlindir oasis. After lunch we walk to Bræðrafell hut, across lava fields north of Herðubreið mountain but our cars will be brought to Dreki hut by the hut wardens.
Walking distance: 17 km
Day 2: We climb the lava shield Kollóttadyngja and observe the huge crater in this old volcano. Then we walk to the Bræðrafell mountain and observe many interesting geological features there, after which we return to the hut.
Day 3: We walk from Bræðrafell hut south to Dreki hut by Drekagil gorge. Walking distance: 17 km. We stay overnight in Dreki hut
Day 4: We walk from the Dreki hut west across the Dyngjufjöll massif into the Askja caldera. The group will be collected from the car park at Öskjuop and brought back to Dreki where our cars await us. We return home that evening.

 

August

3rd Laxárdalsheiði – to pick Iceland moss.  skor

We drive to Brún farm in Reykjadalur valley. From there we walk approx. 2 km onto the moor east of the farm where there is normally an abundance of Iceland moss (fjallagrös, cetraria islandica). This lichen was previously an important part of the Icelandic diet. We spend a few hours on the moor collecting the Iceland moss into bags, after which we return to the cars.

10th Blámannshattur mountain (1,166 m).  skor skor skor skor

We drive to Skarð farm in Dalsmynni. From there we walk up the Skessuhryggur mountain to the summit of Blámannshattur. Fine views in all directions, e.g. to the mountains of the Mývatn area and to Eyjafjörður fjord.
Total walking distance: 13 km.

17th Vatnahjalli - Urðarvötn.  skor skor skor

We drive to Hafrá river south of Hólsgerði farm in Eyjafjarðardalur valley. From there we walk along a jeep track up the mountain to Urðarvötn lakes on the high ground. This is part of the old Eyfirðingavegur trail between Eyjafjörður district and Southwest Iceland. Along the route we observe some very old cairns, such as the St. Peter´s cairn.
Max. elevation above sea level: 900 m.

24th Forvöð - Hallhöfðaskógur.  skor skor

We drive across Tjörnes and through Kelduhverfi community to the deserted farm Hafursstaðir. We descend on foot into the Jökulsá canyon at Forvöð and ascend the Vígabjarg rock then go to the magnificient Réttarfoss waterfall in Jökulsá á Fjöllum river. We then walk downstream along the eastern rim of the Jökulsá canyon to Hallhöfðaskógur forest where we observe the spectacular basaltic rock Hallhöfði. We then return to Hafursstaðir farm across the moor.
Total walking distance: 16 km.

31st Siglunes – a sailing trip and a walking-tour.  skor skor skor

We drive to Siglufjörður town and travel by boat from there to Siglunes peninsula northeast of Siglufjörður fjord. We walk through the deserted community of Siglunes. Then we continue south through Nesdalur valley and across Kálfsskarð pass back to Siglufjörður fjord.
Total walking distance: 15-16 km, max. elevation above sea level: 450 m.

September 

7th Tunguheiðarvegur.  skor skor skor

We drive to Syðri-Tunga farm north of Húsavík town and follow a bridal path east across the high ground to the Kelduhverfi community. On the way we observe the remains of the old road. From the eastern edge of the high ground we get a spectacular view across the Kelduhverfi and Axarfjörður communities. The path then takes us down to the Fjöll farm where the bus awaits us.
Walking distance: 16 km, vertical ascent: 480 m.

14th Skeiðsvatn lake.  skor skor

We drive to Skeið farm in Svarfaðardalur valley. From the farm we follow a walking path to Skeiðsvatn lake where we admire the autumn colours.

21st Bíldsárskarð pass.  skor skor

We drive to Fífilgerði farm east of Akureyri and follow a walking path from there across Vaðlaheiði mountain through Bíldsárskarð pass. We desend into Fnjóskadalur valley where the bus awaits us.
Total walking distance: 10 km, vertical ascent: 530 m.

 

October 

12th Fálkafell – Gamli - Kjarnaskógur. skor skor

We drive up Súluvegur road west of Akureyri and walk from there up a rough path to the Fálkafell hut. From the hut there is a beautiful view across Akureyri town and the surrounding area. We then follow a walking path downhill to an old scout hut, Gamli, after which we descend to Hamrar camping site where some of our cars await us.

 

November

2nd The banks of Eyjafjarðará river.  skor

We drive to the car park at Leiruvegur by Kaupangur farm east of Eyjafjarðará river. From there we walk along the old main road west to the river and then south along the east bank of the river to the bridge by Hrafnagil. This walking route takes us through a very peaceful area even though it is in the middle of a busy community.
Total walking distance: 10 km.
