FFA 2026 Travel Plan
The Akureyri Travel Association's travel schedule is valid for one year at a time. Everyone is welcome on the company's trips, whether they are members or not. Children and teenagers are also welcome when accompanied by an adult, parents need to assess whether they trust them on the trips. There are seven special children's and family trips.
It is advisable to book well in advance for longer trips and those where the number of participants is limited.
If you need to cancel a trip, please send an email to ffa@ffa.is, it is not enough to call to cancel.
Akureyri Travel Company reserves the right to correct errors, cancel a trip, postpone a trip or change the schedule due to weather or other external circumstances, as well as if there is not enough participation. If the company cancels a trip, the confirmation fee or trip will be refunded.
On Akureyri Travel Company trips where cars are pooled, passengers contribute to the cost of the car by paying the driver of each car individually.

Participation fee and payment arrangements
Two prices are given: company price / others.
For most trips, payment is due upon departure or shortly before the trip. For several trips on the 2025 itinerary, a confirmation fee must be paid no later than 14 days after the claim is created in online banking. The confirmation fee is non-refundable unless the trip is canceled, more information about refunds. A more detailed explanation of the payment arrangements for each trip is provided in the event for each trip.
Estimated travel time
Estimated travel times are only a guide and depend on the group and circumstances at any given time. Passengers travel with the company at their own risk. Akureyri Travel does not insure its passengers or their luggage and encourages people to familiarize themselves with their own home insurance or purchase travel and accident insurance.
On Akureyri Travel Company trips where cars are pooled, everyone contributes to the cost by paying the driver of each car individually.
Pets
If a dog owner wants to take their dog on a walk with FFA, the dog must be in
leash. It is advisable to state when registering that the owner intends to take a dog with them so that the tour guide is aware. The dog's owner is fully responsible for the dog during the tour.
If any participant in the tour or the tour guide is allergic to dogs or is not willing to go on the tour with a dog, the dog must leave. The tour guide will take the lead if necessary. Dogs cannot be on a tour where a bus transports the group.
NOTE: Dogs and all pets are not allowed in FFA pavilions.
Travel Promotions 2026
In February - introduction to summer vacation trips 2026
Summer vacation tours 202 are presented in words and pictures at the FFA premises, Strandgata 23. Tour guides will be present at the site, giving information and inviting you to chat.
A tour announcement at the VMA will be announced later but will be made at this event.
The entire travel schedule will be presented, as well as the summer's physical activity projects. Children's and family activities will also be presented.
The presentation is at the VMA and starts at 8:00 PM, entrance on the west side.
Ski trips in February, March and April
In February, March and April 2026, FFA ski trips will take place with the same arrangement as in 2025. 10 trips will be set up and will be advertised at short notice depending on where the best skiing conditions are at each time.

Let's enjoy the winter in Kjarnaskógur where the weather is always good, make snowmen, slide and play together. A fun outdoor activity suitable for all ages.
It is important to come dressed very well, with a light, cocoa and a good packed lunch. It is expected to be 1-2 hours.

This is a trip for experienced outdoor enthusiasts. The trip could be shorter but hardly longer, depending on the weather and snow conditions and the whims of the tour guide.
An ideal trip for those who want to travel with their luggage in a pulka or on a sled.
We will be staying in the Akureyri Tourist Association cabins on Öskjuvegur. Everyone will be self-sufficient with their own food and equipment.
This is a six-day winter trip that requires appropriate winter equipment and participants must be prepared accordingly. Required equipment is off-piste skis with steel edges, warm clothing, warm shoes, a backpack or a pulka. Tour guides will be in touch about the necessary equipment as the trip approaches. Overnight stays will be in the huts Botni, Dyngjufell, Dreki and Bræðrafell.
1st day: Svartárkot - Botni, overnight in Botni. 15 km.
2nd day: Botni - Dyngjufell, overnight in Dyngjufell. 22 km and a bit on the leg
3rd day: Dyngjufell - Dreki, overnight in Dreki. 20 km and a considerable climb up to Jónsskarð.
4th day: Dreki - Bræðrafell, overnight in Bræðrafell. 20 km over uneven lava in parts
5th day: Bræðrafell - Botni, overnight in Botni. 28 km.
6th day: Botni - Svartárkot. 15 km and a bit underfoot.

This is a three-day winter trip that requires appropriate winter equipment and participants must be prepared accordingly. Required equipment is off-piste skis with steel edges, warm clothing, warm shoes, a backpack or a pulka. Overnight stays will be in the Bergland and Laugafell cabins.
Tour schedule:
1st day, Friday: Hólsgerði - Bergland
Drive to Hólsgerði and strap on your skis for the hiking group. Overnight in Bergland.
Distance: 15 km. Elevation: 840 m.
2nd day, Saturday: Bergland - Laugafell
If the weather is good, we will hike through Sesseljubær in Geldingsárdrögar on the way to Laugafell. The pool in Laugafell is warmly waiting for warm hikers. Overnight in Laugafell.
Distance about 20 km. Hiking elevation insignificant.
3rd day, Sunday: Laugafell - Hólsgerði
The goal is to arrive at the first town in Eyjafjörður before dark.
Distance: 35 km, quite a bit of walking by the end of the day

FFA trip to Akureyri's town mountain. The hike is along a marked and fairly easy trail to the mountain. There is a very beautiful view from Súlar. Hiking equipment is based on the terrain and conditions.
NOTE: In winter and early spring, hiking to Súlur is more difficult than in summer.

Bird watching in Svarfdæla Nature Reserve. We will visit Böggvisstaðasandur, Flæðatjörn,
Hrísatjörn and Tjarnartjörn. You can expect all major species of ducks and wading birds there.
The tern and the heron are annuals at Hrísatjörn. For example, the tern nests at Böggvisstaðasandur,
Shearwater gulls, sandpipers and terns. From Tjarnartjörn we will walk across to Hánefsstaðaskógur.

Drive to the parking lot at Leirhnjúk north of the Krafla power plant. First walk to the Vít crater and from there to Leirhnjúk. From Leirhnjúk there is a marked path to Reykjahlíð which mostly follows the lava flow from 1727 called Eldá. The path lies at the southern foot of Hlíðarfjall and it is possible to stop on the mountain.
Distance: 15 km. Elevation: No elevation gain, but 300 m elevation gain if hiking to Hlíðarfjall; optional. Cars must be transported between Reykjahlíð and Leirhnjúkur

Sail from Húsavík with the North Sails out to Flatey. The sail takes about two hours. The nature and structures of the island are explored under a guide. Coffee/cocoa/tea will be served in Bjarmaskúr at the end of the walk. Estimated time on the island is about 2-3 hours. Sail back to Húsavík in the afternoon. Stop at Gatanöf on the way home for those who want.

The walk goes up from the farm Sigtún through green land, up Smáragil where you can see a series of waterfalls, including Silfurfoss. The whole trip is quite strenuous. You will go slowly to enjoy the trip. Return the same way

You walk from the campsite at Hömri up to the Gamla scout hut. From there you continue along a marked path to Steinmenn. From these fun stone pillars there are good views in all directions. You walk back the same way.

Drive to Fremstafell in Kinn. From there we walk to Barnafoss and then continue along a forest path along the Skjálfandafljót. Walk a little up to the Fellið and then parallel to it all the way to its northern end. Then we walk to Ljósvetningabúð where the cars were left. If the weather is good, we will walk up to Ytri-Hnjúkinn. We hear stories from the area as well as admire the magnificent view, but from Kinnarfell there is a great view in all directions. We look over Skjálfandafljót and see, among other things, Ullarfoss.
There is no drinking water on the route. Cars must be transported between Fremstafell and Ljósvetningabúð.
Distance: 12–13 km. Elevation: 250–300 m.

Meet at the church in Hofsós at 9:30. The boat leaves at 10.

Sailing from Hofsós to Málmey with Drangey Tours. The tour guide meets the group at the church in Hofsós and leads the group to the boat. The island has a diverse birdlife, remarkable history and nature. Walk around the island for about two hours accompanied by a local guide. You will take a scenic cruise to Þórðarhöfði where there is a magnificent pillar rock and Drangey is also in sight. The boat trip takes 4–5 hours. The maximum number of people on the boat is 17 people

June 25-28: Women's trip to Víknaslóðir 3-4 shoes

The walk begins in Borgarfjörður eystri on Thursday, June 25th at 10 am and ends in Seyðisfjörður on the afternoon of June 28th. Those who wish to leave their cars in Seyðisfjörður can get a ride across to Borgarfjörður on the morning of June 25th. Others will meet in Bakkagerði, Borgarfjörður. The walk is a backpacked one, so participants only carry a light daypack during the walk.
The Víknaslóðir hiking area extends from Borgarfjörður east to Loðmundarfjörður. The area is unique for its spectacular natural beauty, where coves, fjords, limestone mountains and majestic mountain views create an unforgettable landscape. The hiking trails are diverse and peaceful, and the path there leads to a nourishing and enjoyable women's hike with a trousseau.
The trip combines outdoor activities and self-cultivation. The program includes hiking, meditation, light yoga exercises, self-discovery games, cold baths, and shared breakfasts and dinners. It is important to approach the trip with an open and positive mind and enjoy the trip to the fullest.
You will stay three nights in the cabins of the Fljótsdalshérað Tourist Association on the Víknaslóður trails; in Breiðuvík, Húsavík and Loðmundarfjörður, where the facilities are excellent.

Tour schedule:
1st day, Thursday: Borgarfjörður – Breiðavík
We walk from Kolbeinsfjörður through Brúnavíkurskarð to the rescue shelter in Brúnavík. We then cross the Brúnavíkurá River and continue walking through muddy and overgrown land across Súluskarð to Breiðavíkurskáli, where we will stay for one night.
Distance: 13–14 km. Elevation: about 900 m.
2nd day, Friday: Breiðavík – Húsavík
From Breiðuvík you walk past the town ruins in Litluvík, up Litluvíkurdalur, through Dalsvarp and over Herjólfsvíkurvarp to Gunnhildardalur. From there you head to Húsavíkurskáli, where you stay for one night. A very beautiful hiking trail, although steep in some places
Distance: 11 km. Elevation: about 700 m.
3rd day, Saturday: Húsavík – Loðmundarfjörður
We hike up to Nesháls and Grjótbrún where the view over Loðmundarfjörður and Dalatangi is magnificent in good visibility. From there we head over Hrafnatinda and hike along them to Hraundalur, across Hrauná and down to Klyppstaðir in Loðmundarfjörður, where we will stay in a gorgeous cabin.
Distance: 14–15 km. Elevation: about 700 m.
4th d., Sunday: Loðmundarfjörður – Seyðisfjörður
The hike takes you out to the southern side of Loðmundarfjörður and up to Hjálmárdalsheiði. Along the way, you will stop at Sævarenda, where guests can check out the eider hatchery and meet eider farmers.
When you reach the edge of Seyðisfjörður, you head down steep slopes to a road where cars are waiting for the group. Finally, you drive to Seyðisfjörður where the group enjoys a nice meal together (not included in the price).
Distance: 12–13 km. Elevation: about 670 m.
Maximum number: 16 women
Ásdís and Birna know the area well and have been there a lot. They have been cabin keepers in Loðmundarfjörður for the last ten summers and also one summer in Breiðuvík. It is therefore with great anticipation that we invite you to join us on this unique journey and enjoy the magnificent nature of the East Fjords in a good group of women.

June 27th: Mývatn Region: Skútustaðir – Litlaströnd – Grænavatn – Skútustaðir 1-2 shoes

Walk along Kráká to the farm Litluströnd before crossing Framengjar, which for centuries was the basis of haymaking on many farms in the countryside. Then walk along old streets and car paths until you reach Grænavatn, where you will stop for a while and learn about the history of the place and the old houses there. After a nice lunch stop at Grænavatn, walk out to Garður and the old highway along the lake to Skútustaðir. Stop at Arnarbæl and end at Skútustaðir around 5:00 PM. It is good to bring a lunch.
All of this walking is on old roads and paths. Along the way, you will learn about various things such as folklore, haymaking methods, wetland restoration, irrigation, artificial craters and much more.
Total distance: about 15 km. Hiking elevation: No hills or rough terrain to speak of.

Drive by private car to Skeiði in Svarfaðardalur. Walk along trails to Skeiðsvatn. Walk around the lake and explore the nature of the valley. It can be fun to wade in the stream and water, so it's a good idea to bring extra socks and a towel.
Distance about 8 km. Elevation 190 m.
The trip is expected to take 5-6 hours.

Miðvíkurfjall (560 m high). Drive up to Víkurskarð and park your car in a small parking lot there. From there, walk up the slope along the stream and head for the hill. There is a beautiful view over the western side of Eyjafjörður and out to the sea. It is nice to enjoy beautiful late evenings on this mountain.

Árni from Dunhaga invites people to join him on an evening walk from Grjótgarður to Heiðarhús, an old abandoned farm. He will provide some interesting information about the people and places in this area. The walk takes about 2 hours.

Tour guide: Una Th. Sigurðardóttir
Drive up to Víkurskarð. Walk along Hrossadalur south of the pass and see the remains of an old court. Then continue along the valley as weather and conditions permit and back to Víkurskarð where the cars are waiting. The walking area is overgrown, scrubby and somewhat steep. It is good to have walking sticks.
Distance 8–10 km. Hiking elevation about 100–200 m.

June 24: Hólavatn in Eyjafjörður 1-2 shoes

Walk around Lake Hólavatn, on the north and west side of the lake you walk around the hills, but on the south and east side of the lake you walk along the shore.

Drive to Öngulstaðir 4 and from there to the summer house Seli. Walk south up to Haus where there is a lookout and continue along the mountain through a wide open field and head east towards the knoll. Then walk up the northeast ridge of the mountain until you reach the knoll. There is a great view over the region here.
Distance: 9 km. Elevation: 870 m.

June 26: Waterfall tour in Eyjafjörður 1-2 shoes

Svavar leads a hike through Þverárgil in Eyjafjörður where you can see several beautiful waterfalls, including Litla Goðafoss. The trip takes 2–3 hours and there is some elevation gain up the gorge to see the waterfalls. Expected return time is around 10 pm.

Drive in private cars to the parking lot at Súluvegur where the cars are left. A bus takes participants to Finnastaðir from where they hike to Kerlinga 1538 m, the highest inhabited mountain in Iceland. Then hike north along the peaks; Hverfanda 1320 m, Þríklákkur 1360 m, Bónda 1350 m, Litla Krumma, Stóra Krumma, Syðri-Súla 1213 m, Ytri-Súla 1143 m and down to Glerárdalur where the participants' cars are waiting.
This is a challenging hike as it is marked as a four-shoe hike. Participants need to be in good walking shape. The hike can take 13 hours, but it all depends on the group, the terrain and the weather. Participants need to dress according to the weather and bring a good, energy-rich lunch for the day and plenty of water as there may not be water on the way. On such a challenging hike, ice axes and the ice axes they come with are important safety equipment. The tour guide will let you know about the necessary safety equipment as you get closer.

Drive to the farm Moldhaugur where cars are left and the hike begins. You will also hike through peat and mud until you reach the ridge of Moldhaugnahálsin. From there, you will follow the high ridge with views in both directions until you reach Litla Hnjúk (790 m high). Those who do not want to go all the way can always turn around. You will go slowly and stories will be told along the way and even some outings will be made, depending on what the tour guide thinks and the conditions allow. This is a comfortable hike up the ridge and the last section at Litla-Hnjúk is quite rocky. You will return the same way

We set off from Lokastaðarétt in Dalsmynn, where the hike begins. We head out to Réttarhólinn and from there walk up Þveráröxl which is outside and above the town of Þverá. From there we continue into the mountain, which is called Þúfufjall. We come down to the town of Þúfu, which belongs to the deserted settlement at the far end of Fnjóskadalur. A fairly steep walk to a great viewpoint where history drips from every branch. Before the hike begins, you need to ferry a car the 4 km from Lokastaðir to Þúfu to shuttle drivers back to Lokastaðarétt or walk back.

Walk from Hofsstaðir up to Hofsstaðaheiði with views of Mývatn and Sandvatn and to the western end of the lake, then down along Hólkotsgil to Laxá. After a picnic stop at Laxá, walk up along the river up in the middle of the slopes and then get a good view of Laxá and down along the upper part of Laxárdalur. You will learn about past power plant plans and the impact they would have had on the area. Stop by "Áslaug", which is warmer and some may be able to take a foot bath there. The trip ends in Hofsstaðir and there you will learn about the history of the town and the relics that have been found there. The walk from Hofsstaðir to Sandvatn is along a car path but then there is peatland and on the slope up along Laxá there is heather peat and possibly remains of sheep tracks. The walk ends in Hofsstaðir between 2 and 3 pm.

Annual FFA trip to the national mountain Herðubreið (1682 m). Overnight in the FFA cabin at Drekagil or in a tent. Must be in jeeps that can reach the ascent of Herðubreið. It is possible to combine in cars, so it is good to know if anyone can take passengers.
A helmet is essential safety equipment, and you should also bring a glacier crampon and ice axe for safety.
Tour schedule:
1st day, Friday: Depart from Akureyri at 5 pm. Drive to Drekagil, stay overnight. Evening stroll around the area if you wish.

3rd day, Tuesday: Dyngjufell – Botni

Final day; old jeep trails are followed from Botni to Suðurárbotni and along Suðurá to Svartárkot. Distance: 15–16 km.

Möðruvallafjall is a majestic mountain that rises above the eastern part of the Eyjafjörður region. It connects to the surrounding mountains and highlands and offers diverse and enjoyable hiking trails. The view from the mountain is great and where you can enjoy peace and natural beauty in abundance. On this trip, the intention is to explore the landscape, enjoy company and experience nature. The first part of the route is quite steep, but after that it is quite easy. You will drive to the east of Eyjafjörður and park your cars at Sámsstaður, where the hike begins. You will hike up to the ridge above the town and from there to Öxnafellsnibba (820 m), which is the northernmost part of Möðruvallafjall. From there, you will head south along the mountain to its highest point, about 1000 m above sea level. The hike continues south until you reach Illagil in Sölvadalur. Then we will hike to Kerhólsöxlin (960 m) and from there we will follow a comfortable path down to Sölvadalur with Illagil on our right. We will cross a bridge over the Núpá river north of Eyvindarstaðir, where the tour ends. After the hike, the group will be picked up in Sölvadalur late in the day.
Distance: 21 km. Elevation: 1100 m.
It is important that participants wear good walking shoes and bring walking sticks. It is essential to bring an energy-rich snack and plenty of water. There will be good breaks along the way and, if conditions permit, meditation and relaxation will be offered for those who wish. After the walk, stretching exercises will be done to loosen up the body.

You start from the parking lot at the top of Súlur and walk up Glerárdalur to the Lamba hut where you will stay for one night. The trip offers a variety of experiences in nature, including having to cross streams on the way. Lambi is a well-equipped mountain hut with oil heating and a gas stove, but you have to fetch drinking water from the stream. When you get to August, it starts to get dark at night and it is nice to experience the darkness in the mountain silence. The hut has room for 16 people, so the number of people on the trip must be limited. You can get more information about the hut here.

August 14-16: Geology of Bræðrafell and the surrounding area 1-2 shoes

Departure at 12 noon from FFA, Strandgata 23. The bus will take you to Herðubreiðarlindir and from there the group will be shuttled to the Herðubreið ascent where the walk begins, the same will happen on the way back.

Ódáðahraun is a great place for those interested in geology, so FFA offers a geology tour where Kollóttadyngja and the surrounding area will be explored. On the southern side of Ódáðahraun at Bræðrafell in Kollóttadyngja, FFA has a recent and well-equipped 16-person hiking hut, where you can stay for two nights.
Water is scarce in Ódáðahraun. Water is collected from the roof of the hut, but it is still necessary to take at least two liters of water per person with you for safety. The area we are going through bears signs of major volcanic eruptions. It boasts peculiar and beautiful lava formations, desolation, a wealth of colors and not least great tranquility, and a geologist who is with us will teach us about what lies before our eyes.
Tour schedule:
1.d., Friday: Depart from Akureyri at 13.00? Drive as far as Herðubreiðarlindir where you will stop for a short while. After that, drive as far as the road leads west of Herðubreið following rough jeep tracks and walk from there about 7.5 km west to Bræðrafell. We will walk across Flätudyngja, which is aptly named. There you can see many interesting geological formations and huge craters. The hut is at 720 m altitude and there is little to no elevation gain.
2nd day, Saturday: Hike to Kollóttudyngja (1,177 m) from where there is a very wide view and Bræðrafell and various other geological formations can be viewed on the way back. Elevation about 500 m.
3.d., Sunday: Walk the same route back towards the Herðubreið ascent where the cars are waiting to take travelers to Akureyri. Estimated arrival time in Akureyri is 4-5 pm.

The last 300 meters are a bit rough. Finally, you go down from Laufáshnjúk where cars will be waiting but you will have to ferry cars there. The view from the mountains is vast and breathtaking both to the south and north. Distance: 11–12 km. Hiking elevation: 1000 m.

Drive to Húsavík. Walk along a footpath that runs through the blue mountain, Húsavíkurfjall. Walk up to Lake Botnsvatn and around the lake along a comfortable footpath. From there, the path leads down along the river and through Skrúðgarðinn. A very beautiful path. The walk takes 2 – 3 hours.
After the tour, those who wish can walk out to Gatklettinn by Bakki with a tour guide.

Easy hike, accommodation and dinner. Overnight at Hotel Sel in the Mývatn region.
This trip is organized so that those who want to go on a short hike over Dalfjall with Þóroddur, the route is from Námaskarður to Krafla. After the hike, you will relax in the hot tub at Hotel Sel and then have dinner at the hotel.
Those who wish to skip the hike can arrive at the hotel at any time, but the hike is expected to end around 3 p.m.
Hiking to Dalfjall: Join cars in Akureyri and drive east to Námaskarð. Walk north from Námaskarð and mostly follow the high ridge of Dalfjall north towards Krafla Power Plant. The hiking terrain has some hills and valleys but is good underfoot, we visit lava pits along the way and cross a lava stream. From the mountain there is a good view west over the Mývatn region and east over the wilderness and finally over the Krafla Power Plant area.
Distance: 8 km. Elevation about 200 m.
The price for accommodation at Hotel Sel is 15,000 ISK per person in a double room. Payment is made at the hotel. Included: Accommodation, breakfast and tour guide. Dinner from the menu paid separately. Registration ends on August 25th because the hotel needs to know the final number by then.

Let's walk together in the dark, where mysteries hide behind the trees! Participants are encouraged to come in costume. It is important to dress well, wear good shoes, have a flashlight and bring a good mood. The walking trail will be open for one hour from 17.30-18.30, free attendance within that hour, everyone walks at their own pace. Participation is free.
