Let's take the step

Let's Take the Step is a walking project by the Akureyri Tourist Association that began on May 5, 2019.


Everyone is welcome, whether they are FFA members or not.


No registration - no participation fee.

  • Aiming to walk all year round
  • Walking is done on Sunday mornings for one hour within Akureyri or in the vicinity of the town.
  • The guideline for walking speed is to walk 3 - 5 km in one hour.
  • The march begins at the FFA building, Strandgata 23. As it progresses, people join in private cars.
  • After each walk, people are treated to coffee and snacks at the FFA building on Strandgata. There is a very pleasant atmosphere and lively discussions.


2019 was the first year of the project. There were a total of 30 walks, with an average of 20 people attending each walk, or a total of 623.


During the Covid year of 2019, we had to take a few breaks and it was not possible to offer coffee on quite a few occasions, even though it was possible. But that year, an average of 15 people attended the walks.


The tunnels closed completely at the end of October. There were a total of 32 tunnels and a total of 442 people attended them.

2021 started earlier than usual, on January 17. Participation was good that year, with a total of 42 marches and a total of 538 people attending.


2022 continued in a similar fashion. The first walk of the year was on February 6th and ended on the last Sunday in November. There were a total of 39 walks that year, with a total of 438 people attending.


In 2023, the first walk was on February 5th and the last was on November 26th. There were a total of 41 walks and a total of 576 participants. There are hopes that the walk will continue for longer next year.


In 2024, the first march was on February 4th and the last was on December 15th. There were a total of 43 marches and a total of 681 participants.


2025 was the first march on January 12th.
