Location: Dreki Hut sits at the mouth of the Drekagil gorge, just below the eastern side of the Dyngjufjöll mountains. The huts are accessible via mountain road F88 from the Ring Road east of Lake Mývatn, or via mountain road F910.
Accommodation in the huts must be booked in advance. Please see the contact information below for reservations.
Note: Mountain huts in Iceland only provide sleeping bag accommodation. Guests must bring their own sleeping bags and pillows, as no linens or blankets are available. Visitors are also required to bring their own food, as there is no food service at the huts. The nearest supermarket is located by Lake Mývatn.
Camping: There is a good campsite next to the hut, but note that we do not accept reservations for camping.
Opening Times: The huts are open from approx. June 20. - September 15. depending on weather conditions. Check updates from FÍ to see when the area is open.
Walking Trails: A marked walking trail leads west from the hut across the Dyngjufjöll massif into the Askja caldera, and north toward the Bræðrafell hut. The Drekagil area also serves as an ideal base for exploring the Askja caldera, located 9 km away by car.
History of the Huts: The oldest hut in the area, Dreki, was built in 1968, with a dedicated hut warden stationed there since 1986. Over the years, the facilities have steadily improved and modern sanitary amenities with showers were added in 2001, followed by the opening of a new hut, Askja, in 2005. In 2007, a new warden’s house named Fjólubúð was built to honour Fjóla Kristín Helgadóttir, a longtime hut warden in Drekagil. Most recently, in 2023, a larger and more comfortable hut, Víti was opened, offering accommodation for up to 40 guests.
